Oil changes at prescribed intervals are still the best way to get the most miles out of any engine. Oil Changes and Oil Type

Motor oil has changed a lot in the last 20 or 30 years. The "3,000 mile rule" for conventional oil doesn't really apply anymore - conventional oils are enhanced with packages of additives like detergents and friction modifiers, and can easily go up to 5K miles between oil changes.

The jury is in, however: synthetic motor oil does a better job of overall engine protection than conventional oil. It's more stable and won't thin out at high temperatures or thicken when cold, and it's resistant to buildups of carbon and sludge inside the engine. Full synthetic is more expensive per quart, but that's offset by an oil change interval of 10-15k miles (check your owner's manual). Newer engines have closer tolerances and higher operating temperatures and are designed to use synthetic oil as a lubricant.

For a compromise, there's synthetic blend oil, including high-mileage formulations that include seal and gasket conditioners. This can help stop leaks and the additives work with the looser clearances inside a worn engine.
